For decades, global socio-political, econimic and sustainability discourses have been trapped in what presents itself as an inescapable trilemma: the belief that we must choose between economic growth, social wellbeing, and ecological integrity. “Pick two, never all!” This narrative assumes growth as the core economy, and that trade-offs with wellbeing and sustainability are simply the price of progress. Such scenarios live not only in policy documents and political programs but in global and cultural narratives that shape political agency and what we believe is possible.
Through narrative analysis we trace the historical contexts of how imagined inevitability takes hold in political and media discourse, and how we might escape it towards more just futures where wellbeing, inclusion, and sustainability become the roots of economic systems for planetary wellbeing.
