The Araguaia Long-Term Ecological Programme (PELD) aims to understand the biodiversity and ecological dynamics of the aquatic ecosystems in one of South America’s largest tropical floodplains. The project combines ecological research, technological innovations and community engagement initiatives, laying the foundations for long-term monitoring. This talk will present the results of research carried out in the region, including a comparison between morphological and molecular approaches (environmental DNA), the use of drones to characterise aquatic environments, and the mapping of sampling effort and knowledge gaps regarding biodiversity. Initiatives aimed at bridging the gap between science and society will also be highlighted, such as participatory fisheries monitoring and the involvement of primary and secondary school pupils in scientific research activities. The integration of these different approaches seeks to expand knowledge of regional biodiversity, strengthen the participation of local communities and contribute to strategies for the conservation and management of aquatic ecosystems.
