Kaya Schwemmlein
ResearcherKaya Schwemmlein (1991) is a social scientist specialized in environmental sciences from a transdisciplinary point of view. Her PhD dissertation (2025) in the Doctoral Program “Climate Change and Sustainable Development Policies”, Ulisboa, focus on a peasant-based approach to agrarian transitions from a scholar-activist perspective. Her works center on food, water and energy sovereignty, green grabbing dynamics, sacrifice zones, degrowth and energy justice, exploring the complexities emerging from the links between the aggressive green exploitation of the rural territory and the continued marginalized condition of its population.
She is an activist for “Juntos pelo Cercal”, “Protege Alentejo” and the “TAMLA” collective, where she examines topics pertaining to the critique of green growth-oriented development.
