PhD StudentAmidu Silva Barai is conducting a Ph.D. in Sustainable Land Use, specialty in Agricultural Engineering at the School of Agriculture (ISA) at the University of Lisbon, starting in 2026 within the Plant Science and Crop production group at LEAF/ISA and at the Tropical Plants and Systems at CE3C/Ciências. He is conducting the project Native vs Introduced and wild vs cultivated – the changing mix of cash crops and food plants in Guinea-Bissau, under the supervision of Dra. Filipa Monteiro and Dr. Luís Catarino, CE3C and LEAF. Native vs Introduced and wild vs cultivated – the changing mix of cash crops and food plants in Guinea-Bissau, project aims are: Aim 1: Document which cash and staple crops dominate production and marketing systems, through surveys of peri-urban and rural markets; Aim 2: The role of homegardens in the food security of urban families in Guinea-Bissau; Aim 3: Assessment of wild edible woody plants and their roles in families’ income, food security and forest conservation; Aim 4: Food genetic resources (wild and cultivated) and diversity of cash versus staple crops; Aim 5: Nutritional and phytochemical profiles of selected Guinea-Bissau’s plants.
