Mariana Scain Mazzochi
PhD StudentMariana is conducting a Ph.D. under a joint scholarship, enrolled in a joint doctoral program in Biodiversity, Ecology and Evolution at the University of Lisbon and Biological Oceanography at the Federal University of Rio Grande – FURG, Brazil. She is starting in 2026 within the Conservation Ecology & Society group, conducting the project “Conservation genomics of a highly threatened group of marine vertebrates, the Atlantic gadfly petrels”, under the supervision of Maria Ana Peixe Dias, Mónica Silva and Leandro Bugoni. Mariana’s Ph.D. project aims to inform the conservation and management of four Pterodroma species by incorporating genetic information through: (1) characterizing landscape genomics; (2) comparing gene expression among different ecological groups; (3) assessing population genetic parameters; and (4) estimating age structure using epigenetic clocks. Mariana has a particular interest in ecology and conservation of marine vertebrates, biological evolution and oceanography. She has also worked in trophic ecology, morphology and ethnobiology of seabirds and shorebirds.
