Sustainability transitions are deeply intertwined with democratic practices. Specifically, democratic participation practices (DPs) proposed by local, national, or transnational institutions and governments, developed through social innovation initiatives, or emerging through new social movements, are increasingly relevant for sustainability transition policies and practice. However, it is still unclear what the key expectations of social actors involved in these practices are, and the outcomes of their performative action.

Taking stock of 13 case studies of DPs in Europe, approached through the lens of the sociology of expectations, the presentation will discuss macro and micro-expectations of the involved social actors, considering the extent to which these were met, and the underlying narratives framing them.

This talk is based on collaborative work with João Limão and Sandra Oliveira, whom the speaker acknowledges as co-authors.
