Asterisk: towards a semi-automated extinction risk pipeline Machine Learning in Ecology

The global trend of declining biodiversity is worrying, and yet we are far from being able to track most species. In part due to a lack of experts, all but the most popular species have extinction risk assessments. In this talk I’ll present Asterisk, my PhD project with which I intend to use machine learning and big data to tackle this information gap. I will present two components of the pipeline currently in development for threat mapping and extraction of species occurrence data from available literature while discussing the challenges posed by automation in conservation biology.
